Lilith is a mythological figure likened unto the dark goddesses, Persephone, Hecate, and Kali. Lilith expresses the feminine power of the divine, creative force of life. There are many stories about the "Lady Lilith." The most well known is the Hebrew myth of Lilith as the first wife of Adam. Once version of the story is that God creates both Adam and Lilith from earth but uses impure sediments to create Lilith whereas Adam is fashioned from pure dust. Because of this Adam expects Lilith to be submissive to him. But Lilith, claiming equality, will not be put beneath Adam. She thus flies away to live in exile by the Red Sea, condemned to bear demon babies.
Having read a pre-publication copy, this commentary follows:
Uncensored Temptation is an uproariously funny novella that is a must-read for those who are not easily offended by an in-your-face review of how certain Biblical tenets have been distorted over time to justify the oppression of select groups of people.
The polytheistic beliefs and customs that were a integral part of the structure for the early Judeo-Christian churches, have been slowly bastardized to create a new order of God/Devil fearing group of people that are now instructed not to question the very basis on which their believes were founded upon.
More traditional branches of Christianity had made great, even if unintentional, strides to minimize reference to the evilness of a Devil over that of glorifying the goodness of God and Man. This has been replaced by neo-Christian push to resurrect Lucifer and re-create that boogie monster who lurks around everything you do, think or say, just waiting to pounce on your soul to claim it (unless of course, you let Jesus Christ into your heart (forget the ten Hail Marys)). This rule over the minions, by fear and trepidation, spills over into the very structure of this society, expressing itself as the justification of the treating of women and “non-believers” as second class citizens.
Uncensored Temptation pokes serious fun at these new and old-age Judeo/Christian values and becomes a critical analysis of how the Bible has been distorted to create an aura of wanton fear and deception. Duality is a common thread throughout this short, but sweet story. This becomes even more significant when relating to current religious values, particularly those of the contemporary Christian who professes holding to such values when in audience with the public, but quickly forgets them when there is something “in it” for themself.
At the heart of it, Uncensored Temptation touches on issues of racism, women’s’ rights, biblical fallacies, ancient religion/mythology, sexuality (homo and hetero), modern religious beliefs, psychological disorders and a slew of other personal and social issues that are very relevant in these times.
I never understood who Mae West was and what her purpose is? Please explain? I am 19 years old, I'm from St.Louis and very interested in women issues and would like to be informed. Lauren
Mae West was born, in Brooklyn, New York, on August 17,1893. By the age of five she had earned the name of "The Baby Vamp" for her onstage performances. She was an American actress, playwright, screenwriter and sex symbol, and one of the most controversial stars of her day. She embraced and introduced a lot of black culture during an era when blacks couldn't and was also an early advocate of gay rights. Mae West spent time in jail for her play, SEX, on the grounds of public obscenity. Mae West single handedly saved Paramount Pictures from financial ruin and was the first woman to make racy comments on film as well as the first to share her stage with blacks (not whites in black face). Mae West died at the age of 87 from a series of strokes~although she only appeared in 12 films in 46 years, she had a powerful impact on us. There is no doubt she was way ahead of her time with her sexual innuendoes and how she made fun of a puritanical society~She did a lot to break down race and gender barriers in the entertainment field, one of the most influential and taboo-breaking figures in history~She did a lot to bring it out of the closet and for that we should be grateful.
The info on Mae is quite interesting. I've heard that Lilith is considered a kind of ahead of her times and even considered evilin some circles. How would you compare Lilith to Mae? It seems that they are both influential people in their own right.
Lilith and Mae West are among the women who ravished the world as the original seductresses; a source of feminine inspiration as both were seductive, assertive, creative, potent, self-willed and to some, dangerous. Creating conflict, confusion and instilling fear in those who refused to accept and understand them. The main difference between these two iconic women is that Lilith is myth and there are many variations about her. Mae West came to us on August 17, 1893 and left behind her legacy November 22, 1980~a mere 113 years ago.
According to Muslim, Hebrew and Christian tradition, Lilith was born out of the first telling of the creation story as the apocryphal first wife of Adam and her refusal to submit to him, a concept that challenges a male-dominated society, which subsequently punished Lilith by demonizing her. So, while society sentenced Mae West ten days imprisonment for her explicit sex scenes, Lilith was banned forever for not having sex by eternally giving birth to demon babies and was then replaced by another female who was more, although not altogether, complacent and agreeable (for she did disobey and eat of the forbidden apple). Lilith also bears the blame for “wet dreams” and stealing babies in the night~S.I.D.S.(?).
Lilith, from a Jungian perspective, can represent the capacity to say no; on the other hand, Mae West the capacity to say yes. They are both shadows and beacons of light to be cited positively for their self-reliance and demand for equality for they represent everything that our society frowns upon; a society that for years that has been taught to suppress everything within us that is most natural and pleasurable or naturally disagreeable (non-consent).
Lilith and Mae West are sex, indulgence and everything one desires to do which breaks both the Laws of God and the rules of man. They are all the things in which tempts and seduces man off the Path of God~the road of man, and into the ways of evil. But as Mae West said, “When women go wrong, men go right after them.”
Thanks for the response. Even though Mae West was pure sex, no doubt about it, I never considered that Lilith represented a woman’s right to say “No.” I always hear people say that wives should submit to husbands, but what’s the basis for this?
Yes, no question that Mae West was pure sex~but she was so much more. According to the biblical myth in regards to Lilith, the female right to say "NO" is exactly what she indeed represents when she refuses to submit to Adam. The basis for people saying that wives should submit to husbands comes from the New Testament~Ephesians 5:22-23'Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the savior.'(NIV version) So was the Bible written by male chauvinist for humankind?
Tom~I believe the Bible, as we know it, was indeed written by man~ The Bible, which means “book” took about 1500 years to be written from Genesis~Old Testament a collection of 39 books, written at the time of Moses about 250 years before the birth of Jesus to Revelation~New Testament comprised of 27 books recognized by the Church as inspired (canon), written by the Apostle John about 65 years after the death of Jesus Christ. The other books, which were not included in the Bible, are known as Gnostic Gospels. Men called scribes did the first writing of the books of the Bible by hand. The Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew and Aramaic and the New Testament was all written in Greek (Greek Mythology influenced?).
The other noncanonical Gospels, of which there are many, includes the Gospel of Mary, which depicts Mary Magdalene as a leader of Jesus’ followers, exalting her over the male disciples of Jesus and providing important information about the role of women in the early church. In the Gnostic Dialogue of the Savior, she is referred to as the woman who understood all things.” In several Gnostic Gospels, in which a fuller picture of the Magdalene is presented, Mary is shown as a favorite of Jesus, the first to witness the Resurrection, a figure with equal (or even above) status to men~a woman so threatening that the male apostles suppressed her role, and those of other women, in order to build a patriarchal hierarchy in the early church. Lost for centuries, Mary’s is a Gnostic gospel, which stressed the idea of salvation through study and self-knowledge as well as the belief that the world is flawed because it was created in a flawed manner, a concept that has turned the study of Christian origins upside down. While Mary is called the disciple “the Savior loved…more than the rest of the women”, the text suggests that she a Jesus see gender as irrelevant, an issue that will fade in the path to the next life. But too, we find in the Gnostic texts, that Mary is under constant attack, most often from Peter~an issue of jealousy perhaps?
In the Old Testament, author unknown, there lies the story of a Goddess, mostly overlooked and often ignored, the book of Esther~I wonder why do you?
I am a writer and visual artist as well as a gardner. The goal with my writing is to raise awareness of the significance of the female role in our society. For more information please visit www.menekatpress.com or my personal site at www.arcrymes.com.
